Weekend is proud to present, Lüscher Psyche Records , a solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist, Jay Lizo, which includes vinyl record paintings as well as an accompanying animation utilizing text and sound. The work explores the artist's subjective associations of color, painting, music, and object-making and was initially inspired by the Lüscher Color test, a psychological test invented by Swiss psychologist, Max Lüscher. Lüscher believed that the sensory perception of color is objective and universally shared by all but that color preferences are subjective. Instead of choosing the test's colors to reflect some subconscious state reflective of the artist's emotions, Lizo attributes the colors in the test to painters whom he admires, ie) yellow for DeKooning, Joan Mitchell, purple, etc. He takes these references further by including his own interest in music and DJ'ing, thereby creating a surrealistic pop mash up that combines Lizo's love of color, painting, and music.

Lizo's animation offers additional insight into the artists he associates with each Lüscher color, utilizing the mash up technique to combine their portraits with text, music and his own image. The result is surreal and playful, allowing Lüscher Psyche Records to exist within a strange convergence of the homage, psychedelic, humorous, and anthropomorphic.

Jay Lizo received his MFA at UCSB in 2005 and his BFA at Ringling School of Art and Design in 1998. He has had solo exhibitions at Box 13 Gallery in Houston, Texas, Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. He has participated in group shows at The Torrance Art Museum, Fellows of Contemporary Arts Los Angeles, Monte Vista Projects, Seeline Gallery, High Desert Test Sites, and RAID projects. He is a current member of Monte Vista Projects.
