WEEKEND MATHEW TIMMONS EXHIBITION

WEEKEND is pleased to present OPEN MIND, an exhibition of paintings, prints, sound and video work along with books and ephemera by the Los Angeles-based conceptual writer and performer, Mathew Timmons.

OPEN MIND demonstrates Timmons' effort to make sense of the exhaustive jargon that surrounds us, be it the institutionalized language of bills and credit whose subtext is always desire, to the unintentional oulipian patois of the spam in our inboxes (whose subject is always desire). From these exhaustive and hackneyed forms, Timmons constructs a new logic, one that, by nature of it's mimesis and repetition, creates as subject the underlying intent and affect of such language.

Timmons' work, though always language-based, explores both the written word and the expression of language through sound. The opening reception will feature readings and performances orchestrated by the artist, and including performances from Harold Abramowitz, Allison Carter and Andrew Choate. Also, as part of the exhibition, on March 31st, Mathew Timmons will present The Saffron Green, a space opera in a public space, with his collaborator Geneva Skeen at a location to be announced.

Mathew Timmons' books include Joyful Noise for three or more voices (Jaded Ibis 2012), The New Poetics (Les Figues 2010), CREDIT (Blanc Press 2009), and The Archanoids (a CD of solo and collaborative sound poetries 2010). His visual and performance work has been shown at Human Resources Gallery, Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Public Fiction, François Ghebaly Gallery, (323) Projects, LACE, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, California College of Art, Outpost for Contemporary Art, ArtSpeak Vancouver, LACMA, UCLA Hammer Museum and as part of ArtLA.
